Bride & Groom Shoot — Olbrich Gardens

What is a bride-and-groom shoot?   Well, instead of an engagement shoot or a bridal shoot, we did a bride-and-groom shoot at Olbrich Botanical Gardens.  Christina & David were married on July 2, 2011; you can see the post for their wedding pictures HERE.   These pictures were taken after their honeymoon when they were relaxed and in perfect peace.   The following are some samples of the pictures I took.

This first picture was taken at the reflecting pond on a bright, sunny day.  We got some great reflection in the water.

I joked with them about taking a swim in the pond.  Nevertheless, they did take a “dip,” as shown in the picture below.

Bride Groom Shoot 2 Bride & Groom Shoot Olbrich Gardens

I like to shoot in shady areas.  With all that sun the bride & groom need the shade to show their expressions.

With this shot I asked them to act naturally as they walk toward me.  I think they did a great job of “acting”.   That is not so easy to do with all kinds of people watching you, including Christina’s parents (who also attended the shoot).

The sprinkler fountain is one of several water scenes at Olbrich.  This is a favorite for many people, as it has gorgeous colors in the background.

Christina and David are celebrating their new marriage.

Bride Groom Shoot 4 Bride & Groom Shoot Olbrich Gardens

This is one of my favorite pictures.  Christina looks so angelic with the veil and beautiful smile.

In the background is one of several waterfalls in the park.   Christina is standing beneath a footbridge, which provides some nice shade.  I use a studio strobe to bring in soft light.  The background is lit by the sun, while Christina is lit by my strobe.

Bride Groom Shoot 5 Bride & Groom Shoot Olbrich Gardens

Below is a thinly veiled kiss and an awful pun.   But it is a beautiful picture.

Bride Groom Shoot 6 Bride & Groom Shoot Olbrich Gardens

I love to focus on flowers and have the bridal party–or in this case the bride and groom–out of focus in the background.

Bride Groom Shoot 7 Bride & Groom Shoot Olbrich Gardens

Another one of my favorite shots is to focus on the couple’s rings.

Bride Groom Shoot 8 Bride & Groom Shoot Olbrich Gardens

I took lots of shots while they were sitting on a bench.  The flowers and other foliage are so beautiful that they can be distracting and become the focus instead of the couple.

This is an example of what you can get with great natural-looking light and close-up shots.   Christina and David have great smiles.

I like how Christina has her elbow on David.  She looks comfortable, and the image reflects how they are best friends and that they enjoy each other.

I was told that they wanted this picture because Christina’s grandmother and mother wore this veil (different from the veil in the other pictures).  The picture is of Christina’s grandparents.

Tim, Jessica & Roman Mackie — Baby Photography

Tim and Jessica brought their newborn baby, Roman, into the studio for his first professional photo shoot.  Roman was in good spirits when he arrived, so we set him down right away in the wicker basket and Jessica attended to him, as shown in this first picture.  I like this picture because of the closeup on Roman’s face and the good look at his blue eyes.

Roman 1 Tim, Jessica & Roman Mackie Baby Photography

My 50 mm lens provides a blurred look in the background, also known as shallow depth of field.  With a small aperture of 1.4 or 1.8, the focal plane is minimal, meaning the distance for how much of the subject is in focus is minimal.  A large aperture, like f5 or f6, would create a much deeper depth of field and most everything would be in focus.   Point-and-shoot cameras tend to produce a deep depth of field.  They do well at having everything in focus.  This is o.k., but it does not produce the type of pleasing artistic effect seen in these photos.

Here is a wide-angle shot giving a view of the backdrop, the lighting, and the Mackie family.

Roman 2 Tim, Jessica & Roman Mackie Baby Photography

I brought out my tripod and macro lens to get this ring shot on the baby’s toes.   It is a fun way to symbolically tie the family together into one picture.

Roman 4 Tim, Jessica & Roman Mackie Baby Photography

Here is Roman in his dad’s hands.  I love how the shot includes Tim.  But if you were not looking at the picture carefully,  it would be easy to miss him on the side.

Roman 5 Tim, Jessica & Roman Mackie Baby Photography

Here is Roman in the baby hammock my wife crocheted for the studio.   It turned out that Roman was too interested in the surroundings to fall asleep.

Roman 6 Tim, Jessica & Roman Mackie Baby Photography

I think this is a beautiful shot of Tim with Jessica in the background.  Dad is delighted with his son.

Roman 8 Tim, Jessica & Roman Mackie Baby Photography

Another look at Tim, with Jessica giving a soft smile.   There was a moment when I saw Tim look up over his glasses (I didn’t have the camera in position to shoot it).  I thought it looked pretty cool, so I told him to do it again.  I think the picture works.

Roman 9 Tim, Jessica & Roman Mackie Baby Photography

Enough with the dad; it’s time to get Jessica in focus.   Except there is Tim in the background being a showboat . . .  but that is not completely true, since I set him up to do that.  I wanted him to show some action.

So here is Jessica with her firstborn.  I love her expression in this shot.

Roman 10 Tim, Jessica & Roman Mackie Baby Photography

Here is a wonderful family picture.  You can see that Roman’s head is slightly out of focus and the background is very much out of focus.   It is a good example of the shallow depth of field that makes the image look so interesting.

Roman 11 Tim, Jessica & Roman Mackie Baby Photography

Here is another family picture with Roman looking over Jessica’s shoulder.   It is as if Roman is looking at the camera with his dad and mom looking naturally at him.  I love the look.

Ashley & Brad — Stoughton Country Club

Brad Schuchardt and Ashley Harris were married July 16, 2011 at West Middleton Lutheran Church.  Though the West Middleton Lutheran Church  has a very beautiful sanctuary very few formal pictures taken there.  Instead the majority of the family formal pictures were outdoor pictures at the Stoughton Country Club.  It was Ashley’s plan and it worked because it resulted in natural light with a beautiful background for their formal pictures.  This first photo was taken outside the church.  The dress is hanging in a tree to provide a more interesting background for photographing her dress.

Ashley is looking radiant in this shot.

Brad Ashley 2 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

As a photographer I really enjoy the opportunity to be creative and shooting weddings provides a great deal of creative latitude.  Before the wedding I go over the plan with the bride for what is important regarding the day.  Then with a general outline for how the day will go and I have a plan for what shots I want to get.  Sometimes things don’t go as planned and we have to improvise.  For Brad and Ashley’s outdoor pictures at Olbrich Gardens we were running late so we had to do some hustling on a very hot day but we still got some great shots.

Brad Ashley 3 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

The wedding party was hot from the bus ride and now walking to this location from the visitor center.  I had everyone under this bridge which provided shade.  I was able to capture the shot with even lighting by using a studio strobe.  I love the result of using a full studio strobe for outdoor pictures.

Brad Ashley 4 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

Olbrich Botanical Gardens is the most feature-rich location in Madison for photographic backgrounds.  It obviously is known for its gardens of flowers but it also has multiple waterfalls like this one.

Brad Ashley 5 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

I love the rustic benches throughout the area.

Ashley had a beautiful bouquet as shown below.  Ashley arranged the bouquets herself.  In the background is her dress and foot.

Brad Ashley 8 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

Ashley and Brad arrived at the Stoughton Country Club in the family hot 1965 Shelby Cobra replica sports car.   The mufflers on each side are especially hot, literally.   Clothing or skin that touches the muffler will burn and a few people found this out by personal experience.   You will be glad to know that Ashley carefully got out of the car without injury.

Brad Ashley 9 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

When getting formals of the groom with each of his groomsman and the bride with each of her bridesmaids, I get the standard shot and then ask for something fun.  I provide a few suggestions but Brad and the guys were over the top.  It was so much fun I could hardly shoot straight.  This is Brad sitting on his brother, the best man.   Also, you might be interested to know that the picture below is a composite of two images.  Can you tell?  I don’t think so.  The bottom half of the best man came from another image.

This shot below belongs in Vogue magazine.   Maybe they will give me a call.

The photo below includes Ashley with her brother and his wife who told him to put a knee down for Ashley to sit on.  Wow.   Great idea!   I love the diagonal line their heads create.   Great pose.

Here was Ashley’s chance to look like a super model.  She did great.  But Brad is thinking, “ya, wait till its my turn.”

Brad Ashley 15 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

So Brad, show us what you can do.  Unbelievable.  It was like watching a comedy routine.  He was so funny.  I will call this one, “Behold, my bride”.

For those interested in the technical aspect of the photo, it is another composite of two pictures.  Can you see the dividing line?  I doubt it.  Let me know if you think you know where it is.

In fact I will make it a contest.  If there are at least 15 people who will reply I will give away a free 1-hour family shoot, including 6 fully-edited pictures on a disk with rights to print to the family with the closest correct answer.  Entries are limited to one per immediate family.  The family shoot must take place within 45 days of the contest ending and within 15 minutes drive from James Studio at 2611 University Ave.   If there are 15 or more responses I will make the decision Friday, August 12 at 8 pm and will notify the winner through Ashley and Brad (leave enough informtion so they know who you are).   The responses must be posted here on this site to be eligible.   Be as detailed as possible, there will only be one winner.  The person/family who is most correct with the most detail will win.  Be aware that all answers must be approved before they are posted.   You can write your answer in the “Speak Your Mind” box at the end of this post.  If there are enough responses for the contest I will post the two images after the contest is over and reveal the winner with the winning answer.

Brad Ashley 16 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

The following picture is also a composite.   Sorry, no contest for where it was composited together.

Brad Ashley 17 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

The contest is completed!   There was a lot of activity checking out the pictures and we got some good guesses for solving the puzzle.  The following is what happened.

I saw the first image and loved it except that Ashley’s head was cut off.  I thought it would be a classic if it wasn’t for that.  I decided to create a composite from two images.  To do that, in Photoshop I had to make the canvas bigger as shown in the picture below.

Ashley Brad 2 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

I also saw the image below which I like a lot too.  It showed all of Ashley but this time Brad was cut off.  The other issue is I really liked Brad’s expression and the use of his arm more in the first image.  So I wanted to keep that look while putting together more of Ashley.

Ashley Brad 3 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

The trick was how to get the two pictures to work together.  It turns out that the key was matching up the tree in both images.

After the contest was announced I noticed a problem.  There was a big gash in the tree that I forgot to fix (see the arrow).  I am surprised that no one mentioned it in their answer.   It could have been the key to being closest to solving the dividing line puzzle.

Ashley Brad 4 Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

The picture below shows the dividing line.  The red portion was kept from the good picture of Ashley and the natural color was kept from the good picture of Brad.  So you can see the line is not simply around Brad or around Ashley.

Ashley Brad Ashley & Brad Stoughton Country Club

The following picture is one of my final versions.  I added an artistic affect that makes the background have specks all over it.  I also have a version without the artistic affect.  Notice that the gash in the tree is now fixed.

Concerning the contest there is no winner since we did not get 15 responses.  However, I would like to make you an offer.  For those who participated I will give you an additional $50 off the one and two-hour portrait specials for August.  Go HERE to see the special.   If you participated in the contest I will give you an additional $50 off the August special price.

Thank you for playing.  It was a lot of fun to see what you all came up with.  I hope you will take advantage of my offer.  The family shoot does not have to be completed in August but it does need to be booked in August with a 50% deposit.

Thank you!

Jim

Lizzy & Kyle — First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

Kyle Smasal and Elizabeth (Lizzy) McNabb were married July 15, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church in Waunakee, Wisconsin.   I have photographed in this church previously; it is a beautiful facility with a very nice sanctuary and a wonderful chapel.   Lizzy and Kyle chose to do a First Look to provide more time for all the pictures they wanted before the ceremony.    For me the First Look is great for a variety of reasons.   Check out the next few pictures as I continue to explain why this is a good option.

I fully understand the emotion of seeing each other for the first time as the bride comes down the aisle.   It is a beautiful thing and that is how I saw my bride the day I was married a long time ago.   But for practical, aesthetic and romantic reasons it is also worth considering the First Look.

We are covering the event with two people and thus two angles.   The scene is set.  Lizzy enters the chapel and is gracefully shown in soft, natural light.

LK 1 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

With natural looks, from natural feelings, the beauty of the moment is captured.

LK 2 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

In this picture the flowers are in focus but the mood of the photo is not about the flowers.  It is still obviously about Kyle and Lizzy.

LK 3 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

Because there are not hundreds of people watching, it is easier to express natural emotion and enjoy the moment.

LK 5 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

There is also time for me to suggest a pose or two and get another romatic look.    Then it is time for us to leave and let the couple have some time alone.   Compared to seeing each other for the first time during the ceremony, the First Look is a more private and intimate experience .

LK 6 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

Here Lizzy is carrying her older sister.   For their engagement pictures I had Lizzy holding Kyle up in the air (he was holding onto a tree) so I thought this would be a nice compliment.  It is also a great opportunity to tease Lizzy about her amazing strength.

LK 7 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

Though we were taking formal pictures, I really like this candid shot.  It reflects the mood of the day.

LK 8 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

I don’t post a lot of formal pictures on my web site.  However, showing the ability to properly light for formals is important,  too.   I do not use a camera flash as many photographers do, but I use a studio strobe with a secondary off-camera flash off to the side.   This allows for the faces and bodies to be clearly seen and for the eyes to sparkle.

LK 9 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

Creative outdoor photography is very important to me.  I try to come up with new ideas for each wedding.

LK 10 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

I also use a lot of shots that I have done in the past.  The iPhone shot has become one of my favorites.

LK 11 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

Across from the Capitol is Grace Episcopal Church, which has beautiful trees and a nice garden.   It offers an attractive background and beautiful shaded light.

LK 12 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

The picture below is another one of my favorites.   The wedding party is probably pretty confused about why I am laying down on the hot street taking pictures of the flowers.   But they didn’t complain.

LK 13 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

The Wisconsin Capitol offers a huge selection of beautiful angles, shapes, windows, and gardens for backdrops.   The shot below is one of my top favorites.

LK 14 Lizzy & Kyle First Presbyterian Church Waunakee

The reception was held at the Inn on the Park, which is across the street from the Capitol.  It has many beautiful furnishings inside and is an excellent location for a wedding reception.

Stacie & Brad — Wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton

Brad and Stacie were married at the Forrestal Gallery in Middleton on July 9, 2011.   To make things interesting they decided to have their outdoor pictures taken as Vilas Zoo.   Brad wanted it to be like a day at the zoo.   One nice thing about weddings, people are especially nice and complimentary, saying things like, “Oh what a beautiful dress.”  “Its a wedding party at the zoo – what a great idea.”   And when we were getting shots in front of the lions people gave us room, no one complained and when we were done people came swarming in.  I did not realize that a crowd was watching and waiting behind me.   I was impressed and said a big thank you to everyone.

This first shot marks the beginning of our trip in the zoo grounds.  I had the wedding party on a picnic table which provides for good spacial balance.

BS 2 Stacie & Brad Wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton

While in the same area I took the opportunity to lay the flowers down and get an artistic shot of the couple in the background.

BS 1 Stacie & Brad Wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton

Though you can’t see them very well, the lions are in the background.   Taking a photo with the couple holding the phone is one of my favorite shots.  Brad and Stacie are showing off another pose making the whole image look great.

BS 3 Stacie & Brad Wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton

Now the giraffes are more prominently placed.  I love this shot because the giraffes appear to be kissing!  I mean when I look at the picture close up I can see the giraffes are lips to lips .  I don’t know if this is common giraffe behavior.  Maybe they were sharing a snack or maybe it was purely a coincidence.

BS 4 Stacie & Brad Wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton

I asked Brad to lift and twirl Stacie and I asked the wedding party to jump.   My instructions for when to jump were not clear.  Mostly, they did not all jump at the same time –except once and this was it.  I was amazed that everyone was off the ground.   I think the taller giraffe was wondering what kind of strange ritual this was going on among the humans!

BS 5 Stacie & Brad Wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton

We took a trip to Olin Park to get several wedding party pictures.  They were suppose to look casual.  What do you think?

BS 6 Stacie & Brad Wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton

Next was the wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton.   The ceremony was outdoors but was covered by a semitransparent tent.   In the background where the minister is standing is a gazebo.

BS 7 Stacie & Brad Wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton

I think this is a very pretty ring shot.  The rings are pretty too.   I used my 100 mm macro lens to get a good clean closeup shot of the rings and hands.

BS 8 Stacie & Brad Wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton

I am not really big on taking pictures of flowers.  They are so easy to take.  But with this shot with the windows in the background I found to be especially beautiful.  I plan to use it as an art piece for my studio.

BS 9 Stacie & Brad Wedding at Forrestal Gallery in Middleton

The entrance to Forrestal Gallery is really very attractive with an old world charm.   I love the shots I got of Brad and Stacie at the end of the evening in this location.

This following image is definitely one of my top favorite images of the day.   It was a good day.

Christina Quale & David Heiliger — Monona Terrace

View the wedding day highlights video here:

July 2, 2011 Christina Quale & David Heiliger were married at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Madison, Wisconsin.   I began the day by meeting the couple at the Madison Hilton Hotel.  Christina and David decided to do a “first look” at the Hilton.  For those considering the idea, I think it is both exciting and romantic.  Afterwards they took a few minutes to be alone.   So for those considering the “first look”, I definitely recommend it.   It allows me to get some great photographs and the couple to have a more intimate experience.

The following are just a few pictures from the day.
