Studio Photography of 5-year-old child Dylan

I am on the video team at my church.   A few weeks ago I was shooting with Chris during the morning worship service.  It was still very early, so Chris had his son, Dylan, with him.  As we were chatting, we talked about updates to my new studio on University Avenue and portrait photography of kids.  A few days later Chris made arrangements to have Dylan come in with his mom, Kelly, for studio portraits.  The following are some of my favorites from our session.

Dylan is showing off some of his Kung Fu moves.  This could come in real handy as a Yankees Fan.

In every session I try to get unique poses and looks that I have not done before.  As in the image above, it is great when people show their personality and some spontaneity.  Even so, I always get the traditional poses too. Here is one with mom.

Dylan is a bright kid.  He has bright eyes and lots of personality.  I think the photograph below reveals some of his spunk.

One of my favorite backgrounds is made of barn wood.  The multi-toned wood provides an interesting character to the photograph.

I like this up close look at Dylan while his legs and feet are fading in the background.

I have a variety of stuffed animals in the studio.  I also have a rubber chicken.  As I was holding the chicken, I asked Dylan to mimic what he guessed the sound of the chicken would make.  I had him do it a couple of times and then I squeezed the chicken.  It does not crow or go, “Bawk, bawk”.  No; it howls!  This was hilarious to Dylan, which resulted in the following shot.

Downtown Madison Wisconsin Engagement Shoot

I met Britney and Aaron a few days before we did this engagement shoot at my new storefront studio on University Avenue.  Britney and Aaron are getting married in the summer of 2011 and wanted to have their engagement pictures taken before they left Madison.  Madison, Wisconsin is a great city in which to take pictures because of its many beautiful sites and backgrounds.  We don’t have the beaches of southern California here, but we do have several lakes in the area.  These first few photographs were taken with Lake Mendota in the background.

This photo was taken at the University of Wisconsin campus.  This was shot at the Memorial Union, which is a popular location for wedding, engagement and other photography.  It is convenient that there is this huge yellow chair for couples in which to be photographed.  There are also other brightly colored metal chairs throughout the area which make for a very attractive area in which to shoot.

I love Britney’s expression in this photograph, as she just looks totally happy.

This photograph was also taken in front of Lake Mendota using my 70 to 200 zoom lens.  I was able to get a crisp picture of my subjects while the background is artistically blurred out.

While out on the dock I tested Britney’s athletic ability in a variety of ways and I found that she was enthusiastic in this role.  I think you can tell from her expression that she was fully enjoying herself.

While this picture features Britney’s engagement ring, Aaron is purposely blurred out in the background.  When Britney first saw this, she commented how she enjoyed the image with Aaron blurred out.   She then tried to apologize and correct herself.

This photo shoot has so many cool images.   I love the red brick and old, weathered look as a background to these two.

So here is the lovely couple with the Wisconsin State capitol in the background.  As life is speeding by, time has come to a standstill for Britney and Aaron.   They are truly in the moment and truly in love.  OK, that is really corny, but it is sort of what is seen in the picture — don’t you think?  With a slow shutter speed and a very long, long kiss we did get some pretty cool images.  It took several tries to get it right.  I was using my 70 to 200 mm lens and I was a fair distance away from them so that I could include the capital and the sky.  With the traffic zooming by they couldn’t hear my instructions well.  At one point I was shooting, then reviewing the pictures in the back of my camera.  After a while I looked up to see they were still in the same pose kissing.  It was a very funny moment for me.  It was also funny to hear the cars honking as they were driving by.  I was down State Street, away from the traffic, so the people driving by probably had no idea this was for a photo shoot.

What is missing in this picture?  Or more specifically, what is missing on this tandum?  State Street is a popular road for bicycles, and tourists on bicycles.  In this case there is a couple getting their picture taken on a tandum bicycle with no pedals or a handlebar in the back.  Even so the picture has lots of color and everyone seems to be happy.

I am concluding this series with State Street shops in the background.  I love the many colors the shops and the people provide.  The tree adds some great earthy tones, the couple look relaxed and so the whole picture works well for me.

James Studio Madison Baby Photography of Estelle

July 9, 2010 Estelle, her mother, and her grandmother came to James Studio for some portraits.   Estelle and her mother came from the Milwaukee area.   Our time together went very well and we were able to get some fabulous shots of Estelle.

If you look closely you can see me reflected in Estelle’s eyes on this shot.  I love those bronze colored eyes, they are rather unusual.

This is my favorite shot of the day.  I think the picture looks better in this vertical position; Mom was actually lying down and had Estelle on her chest.

Baby Photography of Isabel

Isabel is a happy 6-month-old girl from my neighborhood.  She came to visit on July 28, 2010 for a series of pictures.   The following are a few pictures taken at James Studio.

This is my favorite picture of the day due to the wonderful smiles.

This is an unusual picture because both the mother and baby are in perfect profile.

James Studio Madison Wisconsin Senior Photography of Matthew

On July 22, 2010 Matthew came into the studio with his dad for some basic senior photos.  Taking pictures was not Matthew’s favorite thing to do during his summer vacation.  But with dad’s help in getting him here, we did get it done.

After a few shots, Matthew warmed up.

I also got some shots of Matthew with his dad against the high key wall.   The white wall provides an uncluttered look that is often seen in magazines and websites.

Senior pictures are due at the beginning of October, so Matthew and his mom set up a time for a second shoot.  This time they went shopping first, so Matthew was prepared.  Here is Matthew sporting his favorite shifrt with the barn-wood background.

I also took some pictures of Matthew with his mom.

Matthew was kind of touchy about pictures of his mom kissing him.  So in the following she just gets close.

Across the street from the studio is a very nice set of railroad tracks.  So we all took a short drive to the other side of the tracks.  We found a good place to park and got some terrific pictures with Matthew on the curved tracks.

These tracks are still in use.   As we were parking, a train was going by.  I regret to say I did not get a shot of Matthew with the train in the background.  Maybe with the next senior.

I have been at the studio doing some late-night editing.  Though the traffic noise is hardly noticable, when the freight train goes by it makes a great amount of racket.  The students in the nearby appartments must be very good sleepers or they get greatly annoyed.  The wheels make a high-pitched screech as the train goes by.

Matthew has this hot car.  It’s a BMW and I have been told that it was a race car.  As you could imagine, Matt enjoys his car.  He was pretty shy about showing it off in pictures, but with his mother’s encouragement, he was willing to do it.  This spot is close to Hoyt Park.  I think it worked out very well.  Here are a couple of the angles I got on Matthew and his red BMW race car.

I asked Matthew to give me the tough-guy look.  He was not into it.  But we did get a nice photo.
